In some sense, there really is no difference. One could say either: "The object - or the objective - of chess is to force checkmate on your opponent." Either word can mean "the aim/target/hoped-for result".
On the other hand, checkmate is always the 'objective' of chess, but you could say one of the 'objects' of chess is enjoyment or mental stimulation or whatever.
