Serendip is said to be an old name for Sri Lanka. Horace Walpole (C18 writer) coined the word from the title of a story, 'The Three Princes of Serendip', in which the heroes were forever making happy discoveries of things they had not set out to find. ( Bet you were dying to know that !)
