where did the phrase 'hells teeth come from

There may be a reference here to Matthew Chapter 8 Verse 12, which speaks of people being cast into outer darkness (ie hell) where "there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
'Hell fire!...Hell's Bells' and similar oaths are used in much the same way when things are seen to have gone terribly wrong.

Is there any chance you're thinking of the phrase "hens teeth". As in "..........as rare as hens teeth". I'm sure oringinated from the fact that they simply dont have any!!
