Too Cold???

My nan used to say "it was too cold to snow".......My friend and I were talking about it last night and we wondered how this saying came about or is it that my nan was just making things up????

It does not mean it's too cold per se, it means, in UK anyway, that it is high pressure in winter, ie cold and probably clear sky so the required conditions for snow do not exist. it obviously can't be too cold to snow purely on th temperature, i mean it snows in lots of very cold places! I have heard the phrase lots of times so your nan is not making it up.

I remember a time in the 70s when the winter was really cold; -15�C to -20�C. it was only when the temperature 'rose' to about -5�C that it snowed. With no insulation between soil and sky a clear sky produces more frost than a clouded sky and along with cloud ; potential snow
Never experienced these temperatures since the 70s!
