'a flight of stairs' come from. As clearly it has nothing to do with flight (i think, ermmmmm ahh you tell me) Cheers

a flight of stairs, a gaggle of geese nothing much makes sense in the world
The idea has been around for centuries. For example, describing a building in 1703, the writer said: "...the stairs fly directly back again, parallel to the first flight." Clearly, the words refer to the fact that stairs are designed to 'take one aloft' or 'into the heights', just as a bird's flight does.
