The word's origin is unknown but it started life as a piece of American slang in the very early 1900s to mean anything of special excellence.
. . . sounds pritty special too me
maybe to represent the sound of someone "humming up" a particularly meaty "grolly", or heavy, ponderous yield of mucous, before yoiking it at the spittle, the impact providing the "DING"??
