Simon-Peter, Andrew, James and John - the first four - were all fishermen. Matthew was a 'publican', which in those days meant a tax-collector/customs-officer not a pub-owner. Simon (No.2) was a zealot, a sort of anti-Roman terrorist...a kind of suicide-bomber of the day!

That's half of them, I'll leave the remaining six - Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, James (No.2), Lebbeus (surnamed Thaddeus) and Judas for someone else to sort out.

Although I know Paul (Saul) was not originally one of the twelve I think he was called to discipleship after Judas Iscariot hung himself. I know that his profession was a tentmaker.
Paul (saul) was also a Zealot originally, before his conversion.
Weren't they all 'Fishers of Men'? Or am I thinking of something else?
Gazzawazza, Paul was never a disciple; Judas was replaced by Mathias. None of the gospels seem to specify what professions the disciples were (apart from the two sets of brothers, to whom Jesus did say, "I will make you fishers of men").
Maxi, Matthew Chapter 10 Verse 3 states quite clearly that Matthew was a publican...at least it does in the King James Version. And publicans were definitely tax-collectors.
Sorry Quizmonster. I wasn't disputing your answer that Matthew was a publican. I meant to say 'the remaining disciples'.

A more interesting question is what is the name of the 12th disciple. You gave it as Thaddeus, which is what he is called in Matthew. But Mark and the Acts call the 12th Judas (and not Iscariot). How are we meant to work out the occupations if we don't know their names?

i would like to find out the job of these two disciples Philip and Thaddeus? their parents. what they are best known for in the Bible? where the were when they got the call and scripture to back it up. Any back ground of them is fine. Thanks-in-Advance!!
