What the origin of the word slicker, as in city slicker?

From slick in the sense of smooth-tongued or plausible. So, by inference, a rogue or one who cons people out of their cash. A city slicker was someone who worked in the City, esp. a banker or stockbroker, who made money out of other peoples' money.
