Where did we get the phrase "being left in the lurch"?

It came from the French (?) game of lourche, which is apparently similar to backgammon. Lourche was also used as a word denoting that you'd had a bad defeat in that game. Hence : to be left in the lurch - to be deserted or left when in difficulty.
