Rapidly closing in on this having now got over two thirds of the grid filled, but not yet the thematic creation. I particularly liked 23D, but perhaps that's just me. A fun debut (I think). Many thanks Nudd.

Off-topic ... for which I apologise ... but could someone confirm that entries submitted via a printed version of the Crossword Club grid are acceptable to the saintly J E Green?

I haven't tried that route before, being a stickler for protocol, but ... err ... the dog ate my copy of Saturday's paper.
It's worked for me!
Yes, Alekhine. JEG gives written information about this. There is no difference in status between the grids downloaded from the Friday crossword club website and those entered from the Saturday newspaper but he asks solvers, if possible, to submit a grid of the dimensions of the newspaper version, cut with one millimetre around the side of the grid and including the address and prize details but not the title. This means shrinking the crossword club grid. All go into the prize draw together. His 'prize-winner' selection system is absolutely fair (as is all that he does) and you stand just as good a chance.
Interesting - I've not seen those instructions. Ever since I joined the crossword club I've just been submitting it however it prints out. Doesn't seem to have affected my stats although I haven't won a prize in all that time!
Jack - I submit the newspaper version and follow the instructions mentioned above by RR. However I take a scan copy and can assure you that the dimensions vary from week to week. Therefore I would think it difficult for those who don't buy the newspaper to know just how much to "shrink" their copy.

I understand that JEG has a pile of 'spares' cut to the correct size on which he simply writes the name of the solver before shuffling into the 'pack'.
S-matrix - how about DECEIVER and REVISION ? Rather appropriate that they have the desired effect but leave you back where you started!!
Managed to get there in the end...a bit easier than last week. Took me ages to work out the wordplay for 8 down but have finally understood it. I really enjoyed this one and it was nice to have a familiar theme, although I only found it after I had answered nearly all the clues!
hello clamzy - i think you were very clear in what you were saying but my rather cryptic post may well have been confusing - you, i [and as i have just discovered S] are in complete agreement.- but would be happy to clarify....
Got finished quite quickly despite being away for weekend without access to my large collection of books, or the internet. I haven't really bothered with getting the hint, but realise that I do need to check 8d as I too am guilty of assuming the answer without really understanding the clue. I quite enjoyed this one, but not as much as I enjoyed the challenge of last weeks.
Thanks Bellabee I think we're all happy with the result now and Alekhine has explained.
I was for a while in exactly the position described above by Teucher2 and now as above by SallyR.
Always happy to discus these things offline when I can be more specific:-

Yes, Cruciverbali, I have heard exactly the same about the spares that are given the name and shuffled in. Isn't it astonishingly honest and meticulous?
