Hello EV N&C Wine Clubbers,
Well this week was a perfect example of how you should really read the rubric to ensure you enter the answers appropriately! I didn't and suffered badly with 2 of our bridge players!
I am staring at a completed grid, but have yet to come up trumps with the 16 letter indication of the suit! I thought there was some difficult cluing this week, resulting in some words that were alien to me!
Time for a preprandial Jamesons!

Hi doc; well, I took one look at the grid, said "yet another carte blanche/jigsaw? bah." (the Listener has been very carte-y blanche-y lately), and did the Azed instead, which was quite good this week.

I will be traveling for the next 3 weekends, so will probably reappear for EV 971 sometime in June. Happy solving in the meantime!
Evening all, certainly at the tougher end of the EV spectrum, but once the grid fill starts it gets much easier. Nicely constructed, as always with MynoT. The highlighting wasn't immediately obvious, but perfectly thematic.
started it late and 'couldn't put it down' - heeded your warning DocHH and found that the rules for entry really helped with the fill. now i have an expectation of what should appear but can't see it - maybe time for a break - 3 cartes blanches in one weekend are taking their toll.
I found this one a bit of a grind but, with the liberal use of the eraser, got there in the end.
Now for Azed.

Enjoy your trip dr b
Actually enjoyed the grid fill which I thought was fairly easy, must have been dealt a good hand. I agree with the comment about ODing on carte blanche, while I quite like them it is possible to have too much of a good thing - bit like playing a lot of No Trump hands in succession. Yet to spot the 16 cells though.
Hi AndrewG-S

Four words - 16 cells.
don't know why it has taken me so long to dig it out!
Have completed north and west. Have solved the clue that yields south. Think I've got the answer that yields east. Can anyone help me with which clues yield the two eleven letter answers for east and south?
Am I going potty or is clue 5 not in alphabetical order? (I have a five letter solution)

Agree about the cartes blanches.

East starts with C and South with H

You are right, it is not in strict alphabetical order. Similarly the first 'D' clue is not in order
cheers, kayakamina. I shall carry on regardless....thought that I was cracking up.
On my cold solving clues 36 & 37 are also not in strict alphabetical order. EV, Inquisitor and Listener all "cartes blanches" in the same week? Give us a break!
if that's 'queen anne....'+ 'fish not......' they are in the right a-z order turast [but agree about the overload]
listener
in case you're wondering that last one was intended for the 'search' function.
I agree with Kayakamina that the 5th and 14th clues are the ones out of the correct alphabetical order, which is a little clumsy
Add me to that. Are we missing something arcanely thematic? Probably not.

I actually enjoyed it once I got going in the grid. Once the players have been established there is no ambiguity about the placement of the eleven and nine letter entries. After an initial cold solve slog, a fairly quick grid fill.

Thanks, MynoT.
Sorry folks. I had SKIPJACK, which is 8 letters.
Kayakamina
I'm none the wiser
haggis -south- rather than boor fot the first part maybe think glutton.
