Listener Crossword 4142: Noye by Samuel
80 Answers
Is 12 across blessed with the correct clue? I've seen the same clue (31 across in this case) leading to a different answer on occasions, but I can only work out one single word answer which doesn't relate to the clue given in the online version.
Otherwise, plenty of time left for doing other things this weekend, and probably my quickest finish for a long time. An enjoyable romp, so thanks to Samuel.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.contendo/silversolver: the chambers app on the iphone/itouch/ipad includes the full dictionary with a search function (equivalent of word wizard) and the franklin handheld has bradfords with similar search capabilities. this solves all those holiday problems of trying to sneak BRB into the bottom of the suitcase and i really would recommend them
Clamzy - see http://www.chambersha...ectronic/index.shtml.
It has four supposed offerings:
1) The iPhone/iTouch/iPad app - you cannot run this on a laptop. I have this app and find it very limited.
2) There's something called 'WordWeb Pro' that looks expensive ($19 for the basic tool + $39 for the Chambers add-on); I have no idea if it's any good but at least it's the 11th edition. I find the CDRom much better even though it has the deficiency that it's the 9th edition (it also has the appendices and the thesaurus).
3 & 4) The links for the CDRom (9th edition) and the 'PC, PDA, Smartphone' come up empty. Not very confidence-inspiring...

For those interested in clues with two answers, I recall, without checking the records, two double-gridded puzzles in which every clue had two solutions: one by Peeper (i.e. Bufo + Corylus) in the Crossword Club magazine and a relatively early example [doesn't time fly :>)] in the Listener, to which no solutions were received. There may be others. If I have the time, on my return from Budapest next week, I shall try to find chapter and verse.
A great effort from Samuel. Wonderful use of the letter theme, in suffering and change and in the disposition of the proverbial explanation, although not, surprisingly, in the warning phrase. The very last line of the preamble could have been improved. how about "Use Chambers (2008) as your primary reference; seek elsewhere for 6 down."?

Just about any decent iPhone or Android app will depend significantly on the unique aspects of the platform; e.g. the pinch and spread gestures on the touch screen, the virtual keyboard, maybe the accelerometer (the part of the system that detects how you are tilting the device). So expecting the app to run on a PC, without a complete re-implementation, is not realistic.
Most of the momentum is in the other direction; people take popular PC apps (especially games) and figure out how to re-implement them for the iPad.

Much enjoyed - finally looked in the right directions for my 2 pseudowords. What a clever lot you are - with all this technology talk. For holidays I pack the BRB, and a few more reference titles, my laptop, a good rubber and pencilsharpener, lots of spare paper and go to a place with free Wifi. If there is room Mrs EF can come too.
I wonder if I am becoming obsessive about scoring a full year right.
