I finished the grid on Sunday; have the 'poser' (6 words), 'invention'
and Guru's identity, but still have no idea of what the (4,3,5)
answer is? Can anyone please give me a (not too blatant) nudge
in the right direction - then I might sleep tonight.

I've tried solving poser as a standard cw clue without reference to the
invention - should I be approaching it differently?

I thought it might. Could your pdm have been precipitated by potential antisocial behaviour at the checkout? If so, I might have the phrase but am still somewhat foggy about a possible connection to the final word formed by extra letters.

Absolutely. Think of a "character" you might need to help form the last word formed by the extra letters.

Just say the "5" word out loud. It's easier to form the last extra word without it.

I think you're describing my 'foggy' connection, but I thought it a little tenuous. I has been said (somewhere on the web) that the '5' homophone IS the hardest to get into a CW but others would seem equally difficult. Perhaps I'm being a little picky. Nevertheless, I thought this a very fine Inquisitor - perhaps more demanding than this weeks Listener (which, perhaps a little smugly, I'd happily posted by Sunday), which also had a nice pdm that seems to have eluded many.

I have completed the grid, but unable to solve the guru's favourite poser as I cannot work out which letter to take out for 19a, 43a, 5d, 7d, 8d, 24d and 36d. I have hazarded a guess at those letters but it doesn't make sense. Any help out here please?

Loved this tribute! I've completed the grid and solved the poser but am still stuck on the invention. I'm beginning to think I've made a mistake with the last 7 letters as they don't seem to make a sensible word - just 2 puzzling ones. I agree with mad max about the vowels so am now doubting my G & T. Any tips?

Indy-trier, I'm still trying to work out the (4,3,5) answer, but the last word from the extra letters is PANGRAM

Thanks mad max. I had PANGRAT as I made the answer to 40d by taking the T off before adding my king. I thought the M was removed by the wordplay itself (short TERM = TER)! Doh!! Re the 4,3,5 - split your last word and don't think of restaurants.

PS to my last entry - that is if you have a 10 letter word as the last one before PANGRAM. I wrote it as 2 words anyway and just thought of it differently.
