I could only come up with Layla - a song I vaguely remember!
Layla

Thanks - heard of that but thought (wrongly) it was Leila - can't see the wordplay though.
I've no real idea of the wordplay. I know Eric Clapton was a legendary axeman. I also noticed that it could be LAY/song+/with LA (LegendaryAxeman up front, initial letters)
Question Author
yes you are right - it is what they call a "and lit" clue where the wordplay is the whole clue and sois the definition. Thanks
I am totally useless with the technical terms (&lit, anagrind etc) but I think I must absorb some of it somehow!
I've filled in the grid and sorted the punch lines but I'm stumped by the word play for 22A. Can anyone help me tidy up this loose end please?
Forget my request about 22A. It's just clicked! Doh!!
LAY (song) + L(egendary) +A(xeman) if the 'up front' means initial letters.

And Layla is a song with a egendary axeman (guitarist) up front doing the vocals
Sorry- just realised that Neveracrossowrd said pretty much the same thing on Saturday
Still on the subject of LAYLA I've been assuming that "song" was a misprint for "gong" as I think I need a G from either 1 or 2 down. I just assumed that "gong" might be slang for "name". This thread has made me look it up and I can't find my definition in Chambers! So which clue does provide the G? Any ideas gratefully received.
Sorry I'm not familiar with this comp and I don't understand that. Do you need to find letters from the clues then rather than from the answer?
I'm sure the clue as stated is correct- song not gong.
Hi factor30. I need to find G as a corrected misprint in the definition part of either 1D or 2D - and I've convinced myself that 1D has no misprint in its definition. Knowing me I could be wrong, but having totally finished this puzzle I know the G has to come from somewhere in that area.
The G comes from 31 Ac (fourth word)
Am I mistaken or is one of the two entries we're supposed to highlight NOT normally clued? I.e. its clue has a misprint in the definition...
Thank you Doorbell. I looked straight past that word!
Hi TheBear69. You're not mistaken (unless I am too). My across entry definitely has a misprint in its definition.
Yes, the across half of the pair of words that yiled the punchline has a letter worng in the definition so is not "normally clued" as stated in the preamble.
