16a howtowden

Thanks. I think 16 A is Howtowdie ( a dish of boiled chicken).
you are quite correct
Hi Inquisitor fans
Is anybody else of the opinion that the letters to be altered should be in the 3rd and 12th rows and not the 2nd and 12th as stated in the preamble.
Geoff
No, it's the 2nd and 12th all right. You are looking at the wrong grouping of the first 3 letters of the 6 required. Having said that, has anyone any idea about the final step? I can see the right number of contiguous letters, but they don't spell out a word (merely list the required letters) - so I must be missing something. More staring required, fortified by a gl...
11a: (lands)caped

It would certainly work to change letters 6, 10 and 11 in the third row to make a two-word phrase with the word required in the 12th row. I do not see what to do in row 2. Nor the final step. Ten again, I am unfamiliar with the source material and oogle is not helping a lot.
Is the description of the five entries a 4-letter word in the relevant language?
Question Author
Thanks for caped - I did manage to get it earlier. I'm stuck re the preaamble - my grid's all but filled, but I have got nowhere with the two six-letter words.
The Bear - yes, that's the obvious thing but there's no instance of the 1st letter in the grid. I've examined every cell in all 6 directions (and found a few new words in the process - never a bad thing) but discovered nothing relevant. Even the 5-letter English word (being the translation of the obvious one to which you refer) forms a shape with its 5 letters, but does not "read" as a word. More staring, but with dwindling interest. Otherwise a nice puzzle with nice twists, and no, you don't have to skim the novel for the 5 highlighted entries.
The implications of the last sentence in the preamble are significant in locating the letters to be altered.

Google will help with the description if you have the five unclued entries correct.
Thanks for that, but having discovered the last bit (it would have been nice to have been told the number of letters in the preamble - the others were given: why not this?) google has posed another problem. Is the colour used the one following the word in google, or the obvious one describing the 5 entities rather than their principal ingredient? And "overwritten" would surely imply that the former choice would obliterate the important letters underneath. Oh dear! another poorly thought-out preamble. My preference is for the latter choice which I will use to write the letters in question.
When I wrote "google" I meant "wikipedia". Sorry.
Hmmm... yes, Jockie, agree that the final appearance of the grid seems to involve over-highlighting letters which should be already highlighted ! Depending on what colour you use for the initial high;ighting, you could end up with rather a muddy result.
The preamble is perfectly correct. Highlight is not equal to overwrite. If you see the definition, which should be obvious if you have the 2x6 highlighted letters, both the action and the colour are absolutely beyond question.

20 D. Heads out to sea in cutter, slowly at first, keeping velocity constant (5)
ska?s
I went with 'skats', which I hope fits in with 'cutter'(as in ship), but I don't understand the 'velocity' part. I'd appreciate any thoughts, advice.
You are wrong in your answer to 20d. The cutter is not the ship. Right about K, which is defined as the velocity constant.
Question Author
Thanks, Laphria - I wasn't 100% happy with that answer, but ignored it until I'd finished everything else (making new words, highlighting, overwriting).
Question Author
I forgot to add that I have corrected it now.
'Help me' - please. That's a clue to the 12th line whilst savouring a glass of .....

I've filled in all the grid but I can't manipulate 3 letters on the 2nd line to make a sensible 6 letter word. I've examined which crossing down clues can be changed and the only six letter word I can get is ACANAL. It's watery but surely not the answer.
