This is a brute and I've got only about half the answers. Clues are not listed as 'across' or 'down' and extra single letters are yielded by the wordplay in all clues.
After one game I express surprise about defences (9) anti?????
(I see 'antidotes'/defences, but not the rest).
You said Ken may regenerate ruin (6) u?????

Thanks ~ as usual I saw the light just after I had posted the question. Great puzzle, but a pity the Belgian name had to be used instead of a "dictionary" word.

I have the grid full except for 2 leeters top R and bottom L which would give the rescuer. Should I know these setters and although I know the 15 tersI need to insert - where do they go - any hints would be gratefully received.

I hope this thread is still active. I have solved all the clues, identified the relevant
charactersand made the changes but I can't fully parse Thumb, or Hairs and most frutrating of all I can't find the extra letter for Thumb and therefore the message reads rather oddly something about the words of a toy? s this right?

It's not a 'toy' . I've no longer got the paper, but I think the last bit was
'x to y'. (x and y being the people/names mentioned in the preamble)

I think an earlier post showed where the setters are - your 15 letters are to replace those. If that's not much of a help, please post again.

Thanks.Of course X to Y makes sense and that also parses Thumb with one avoiding tax leaving an X. Would you remember Bush occasionally trimmed displays these (a bit shorter) Answer Hairs with U as the extra letter?

Mullingar, sorry - that (hairs) was one of the things I was uncertain about and one of the reasons I didn't finish this off.

After a long struggle, have completed the puzzle in all aspects, but cannot see for the life of me what to do with the 3-letter answers top right and bottom left. Can anyone help please?

That's ok. I managed to complete it without understanding this last detail. It's probably good for the soul to come to terms with a sense of imperfection

I think the "hairs" is parsed as follows: Bush occasionally trimmed = uh + displays = airs so it's the u that's the extra letter.

The top right and bottom left is a ref. to the main character, x, T****n the A****n
