The preaambe says 'The wordplay in 14clues (the answers to which are entered normally, lead to the answer with one letter missing. ...Numbers in brackets give the length of grid entries, all of which are real words.' I don't know if these two clues are involved.

I worked out that the answer to 1 D was 'rappers' - 'wrappers', removing the w from women. This was an affected clue and became Trappers.
