A good solid EV although I more or less had to get the four answers before I worked out how their clues worked as the 17 letters only helped after the event. Very enjoyable, although it would have been good to have a real stinker to stretch out and savour over the New Year period.

I enjoyed this EV but am completely perplexed by the word play for 28A. I know that it has an extra letter and I know what the letter is but I still can't make it fit. Brain must be pickled after a very alcoholic few days!!
Btw has anyone else noticed today's glitch - the info for entering by email is incorrect!!!

Hello all EVers,
Enjoyed this weeks offering. It did include some words not in my vocabulary, and which I am unlikely to use again! Populated the grid more or less in clue number order, which is unusual.
I'm with you Ringer on 28a. The cryptic element seems to include the extra letter, but exclude a letter that should be used in the grid entry. Happy to be shown the error in my thoughts!
I'd like to wish all EVers a Happy, Peaceful and Prosperous 2013, may pens adorn your doormat frequently!

Although I didn't quite match DocHH's achievement of filling the grid in clue order
this was one of the easier EV's.
I think MICH81 (welcome to the EV thread) could be correct about 28a.

Just popped in with belated season's greetings. Too busy/preoccupied to attempt last week's EV before so now attempting two at once. Not finished either oyet but getting there I think. Wishing all EVErs a successful and challenging 2013.

Well, have now completed this week's offering and three quarters through last week's. One observation. 16 and 36a Am I mistaken or are those two clues short a letter rather than with one over?

Both of those have extra letters that contribute to the 17 that in clue order indicate how to deal with the answers to four other clues, each of which do not have definitions. Like Twhi-Who I had to work backwards to unravel the Enigma! It even meant I resorted to an eight volume Encyclopaedia, rather than electronic references!

Shall take another look, Doc. I worked out the instruction okay, though already had the four answers by then, and know what the extra letters are supposed to be. It's just I was 'short' those same letters, instead of having them over. And yes, my encyclopaedia came out, too.

Happy New Year to all EV'ers old and new, hope 2013 is kind and peaceful to all. Haven't even looked at the current EV as am still muddling my way through last week's, NE corner is causing great anguish and as I have the perp and the 2 words I feel I should "Do better". Will plod on.
