What a long preamble, but what a fun puzzle. It took me a few minutes to get what the down message was telling me, but the P D'd, all was clear. Thanks hedge-sparrow.

For those still struggling with the weapon, mrmournful over on Crossword Clue Solver gives a nice hint. Don't worry. He doesn't give it away, just gives an indication of where to look should you want it.

Following the standard routine for finding hidden words I have found a recognisable weapon (though it will be obscure to many). I'd advise those still struggling to find it to interpret "touching the victim" rather loosely.
I would confirm what has been implied previously, if you have doubts or a sense of disappointment you are almost certainly wrong.

I thought at first that Hedge-sparrow was being whimsical here, but then I realized how the three pieces of evidence, for and against, were constructed and worked out the colorful answer. The weapon turned out to have been well and truly stuck into the victim, I thought, not merely touching. The only real disappointment was that I have failed to find a story on which the puzzle was based. Is there one? It has, however, stimulated me to read the complete canon again.
