This has been asked before by me but I wonder if there are anymore ideas as to the answer - or if the compiler has made an error.
30a. Coastal lagoon separated from the sea by a spit of land (4) H?A?
The 2 letters given are correct and the only answer to do with water is HAAF. This is a deep sea fishing ground off Orkney and Sheland.
Any ideas out there please?

I've put Haaf. I think it may be an error.
Head?

encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/haff‎

A freshwater lagoon separated from the sea by a sandbar..
So that suggests a possible setter error- assuming the A is right.
Haff doesn't fit with down clue.

Thank you. I found the HAFF but the letters are definitely as given so will probably have to go with JoolsTwo and hope the compiler has made an error.

down clue ?
What is the down clue?
I'm guessing 25C in your link is the down clue, if so which are the crossing letters, as .not everyone has a copy of the xword
31dn The carob or mesquite(9)
algarroba

Thereby giving the 'A' where the 'F' in HAFF should be
I believe that the setter may have got his Haaf and his Haff mixed up and whoever his proof-reader is has not picked it up.
