Hi,

I have the first set but am stuck on 5A, so wouldn't mind a tiny hint.
(I have the unchecked letters)

Thanks

Difficult to give a tiny hint Boreas but I'll try - it's an alternative spelling of a common shellfish.

Many thanks Slaney,

Will have another look later.
It's not clear from your question what you already know. If you have the 4 checked letters, the Chambers WordWizard only gives two
options - only one will work with the theme.
Question Author
The shellfish answer doesn't seem to fit the theme - although the homophone of that word would in the sense of a 'heavy'

Is that it?
The word (after treatment) is indeed a homophone of "heavy" with a K as 4th letter.
Question Author
But that spelling is only a synonym for the shellfish - or is it?
Question Author
. . . I mean, not the same definition as the spelling with a "c"
Yes -the word I have in the grid it is an alternate spelling for the shellfish word - as puzzled272 says it works in Chambers Word Wizard, and when treated leads to a suitable thematic word.
Are we talking at cross purposes? :)
Question Author
Sorry, I have been very stupid. That word is a 'treated' version of a theme word - so I need to find an anagram, yes?

(I have never heard of the Chambers Word Wizard, but will check it out, so thanks for that too.)
Here is a link - can be very useful...

I have the word now.

Many thanks for the link Slaney . . . is it something you have to subscribe to?

I now need to find the last 2 of the second group, which I guess are treated versions of 2D and 32D.

. . . and many thanks to you too Puzzled.

Very hard to think in this weather.
