25a Yes, 'Dial tone' - (clue reads "... singer...") - 'die' (cease to be, receiving) 'alto + n(ew)'
25 cease = die; singer = alto; new = n.

Thank you all- still unsure where 'America' comes in, or is it just the letter 'A' ? (For 25a)
I took it to mean that an American says "dial tone" - in the UK, we'd say "dialling tone"
