Oh dear - I'm not doing well with numbers this morning - nor directions. My hint applied to 37 down - the first letter of 39 across is the final gap I need to fill.

If you're thinking a kind of synonym for "more" in 37d, how do you explain the rest?

39a is a river. the first letter is F.
All done, but not easy today - took some thinking out.

helveticus - it's what you think it is - check all defn of the first word from your 3 word breakdowner - and 27d is there amazingly!
