Well I've no idea and i have horses.
An 'Ort' is a bit as in a scrap or morsel, so could be eaten by the horse I presume.

Before seeing your answer I looked up ort and found your definition. Must say I'm not convinced by the horse's mouth bit !
ort is in my book under bit the other answer i was playing with is oat
I considered oat too.
Yes the definition of ort is bit, but not as in horses tack.
It might depend on your accent- ort, sounds like oat??
