Waits as in Waiter bringing food?

Yes 'Waits' is an old term for Carollers.

'Yaupie' is Scots dialect for hungry, but cannot get further than that.

Yaupon must mean hungry.
Just checked Chambers. It does mean 'black drink', but no reference to hungry.
Yaup (Scots for hungry) + on (Ontario)

Yaup is in Chambers.
Yaupon says that it is from North America but does not specify Ontario.

Probably will never encounter this word ever again.
Yaup is hungry, on = for, as in "waiting on someone, waiting for someone." Hence, yaupon, the black drink.
