Oh dear ... another puzzle with straightforward clues. The endgame was more interesting, however.

We must have a stinker coming up.

Wow, never thought I'd get there. Now to re-read the book.
I'm going to be too late (again) for anyone to read this but ... one of the characters in the completed grid could legitimately be represented in either of two ways. In the absence of guidance in the preamble, will JEG accept both?
UglyUncle - I think the sentence in the preamble about the second instruction actually makes this clear.
Back from a long break and two puzzles to catch up on. Both fairly straightforward gridfills, but I spent far too long on the second part of this. Thanks to both setters.
A fair point, Philoctetes, although I was assuming that the instruction related only to the imaginary conceptual volume. I shall leave the character unchanged.
Well, I (the Listen with others Numpty blogger) actually performed the second operation that was meant to be conceptual only. Fiddly but great fun. It also confirmed that we had got the first right. Take a look at our blog in a couple of weeks - photo included.
Ruthrobin, I made the actual thing, too. I love puzzles like this. I'll say again, I'm glad the clues were easy so that a numpty like me can get to the endgame.
A belated thanks, Jim 360. No one PDM for me on this one - it's taken me until now to work it all out. But what a wonderful construction! And I had to do the actual construction as well.
Easy clues - but then a real grind through to the end - no actual PDM, just a lot of 3D mental fiddling.

Interesting, but not a favourite (much like the book).
