Oh well,if fictional answers are a part of the crossword that's ok.
you must let us know the answer, Farrwest, if you ever find out.
Probably on totally the wrong wavelength but I'm a big Arthur C Clarke fan and it was the first thing that came to mind :)

The crossing clues now result in S?L?N? X
Does that help? My daughter suggests there is a comic book character called Selene.
Selene is the goddess of the moon.

that's it, alright. Well done methyl,
Without a parse ?Ok if that's what you say.
I've never had a silent kiss in my life but I won't go into detail :-)
spotted=lent inside early evening hours= six
and gateaux has a silent x (to posh people like me ;-))
That reminds me of the chap who went into a posh baker's and said, "How much is them gattocks in the window?"

The assistant replied, "They're not gattocks, Sir, they're gateaux, pronounced gattow and they're £10 each."

"£10?", says the chap, "Bolleaux!"
*snigger*.......;)
Svejk ,spotted -Lent,never in a million would I have seen that, brilliant!

Having started all this and being very impressed with the answer Silent X, I have to ask 'what is the definition?'
The definition is 'silent X', the last letter of gateaux. The wordplay is 'lent', from a Latin word meaning 'spots' inside 'six', early evening.

Thanks Obiter. Finally!
Well done guys for keeping it going until solved - especially Svejk for parsing.
I slept through all the wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Well done- I was baffled too.
