I've no idea but I'm intrigued so this should bump it back to Latest posts ;-)
ME too, do you know the single letter is x? (end of gateaux sort of makes that obvious but then again...)
found this, but can't parse it !!
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sidero
could it be sidero + 1 !!
(ie) clue being 6 and 1 !!
Bit too deep for me that, Sam. Think I take myself off up the wooden hill. Keep those brains ticking over.
If you type 'in the early evening hour spotted last of gateaux' into Google, something comes up on Reddit but I can't find the page :(
think it might be time for me as well captain :-) !!
might have overdone it today on the sunlounger !!
Farrwest did you say your daughter is sending this from the States? I wondered if they have some evening star that we don't see over here, something x. Apart from Malcolm I can't think of anything that has X as a singleton after it.
Farrwest, we are stumped xx
I don't usually use crossword solver but it gives zero results for S----- X

Thank you Prudie, Psybbo, Sam1960, scorpiojo and Captain2 for your efforts. I have asked my daughter to try and complete some of the crossing clues to give us some help!
Planet X?
No, it starts with 's'
Sirius X perhaps?
does the (1) part of the clue (6,1) sit on its own ? or does it make up part of an answer for another clue !!
I've looked for Sirius X to no avail.
X = cross, as in Southern Cross (8,1)?

"The Songs of Distant Earth (1986), novel by Arthur C. Clarke. Scientists in the 1960s discover that the neutrino emissions from the Sun are far less than predicted by theory. It is soon confirmed that the Sun will go nova around the year 3600 CE. Humankind embarks on a massive project to send robot-tended human and other mammalian embryos to habitable worlds orbiting nearby stars. The first destination is Pasadena, a marginally viable planet of Alpha Centauri A... the next likely target was more than twice as far away. The voyage time to Sirius X would be over four hundred years; when the seeder arrived, Earth might no longer exist."
