40 across: Shakespearean fairy captured by faint-hearted person acting (6) HEL?NA. I'm sure it must be Helena but she's not a fairy! Can anyone enlighten me?
Thanks in advance

Ripper,

It's HEN (faint-hearted person) capturing EL(F), (fairy) with A (Acting). This is one of the first type of clues described in the preamble, with F the extra letter to be removed. Definition is "Shakespearean".
ELF ( fairy ) captured by HEN ( faint hearted person ) A ( acting ) gives HELFENA with the F being an extra letter in the wordplay.

HELENA is the Shakespearean of the definition.
