Each clue has a misprint in the definition (I've put my corrected letter in brackets) 22A & 1 down are one letter shorter than number in brackets - if that makes sense please could someone help with the following _
22 across Tense hour in English post for Ailsa (H) (6) T?RANG. 1 down Eccentric European erected an underground dwelling (S) (4) ED?O. A tome academician throws back (P - but I think it's D?) (5) STU?A. 8 down: Eastern porter clutching base of claret filled vase (A) (6) HAE?AL. I like to know how the wordplay works as I have answers for all of these but can't work out if they are correct! Sorry this is so long-winded! Thanks in advance

22 Thrang - host/crowd
1 Eddp, swelling - Odd+E/European
22. I think 'Ailsa' just means we need the Scottish version, 'thrang' instead of 'throng', host.

A tome...yes, Stupa - a toPe.
8 Hamal is the Eastern porter and E is the base - the misprint was in vase, should be vasa, vessel (blood vessel, hence the 'claret' in the clue).
Haemal, relating to blood vessel.

I didn't parse that all myself originally, saw it on an earlier post.

Thank you Neveracrossword - and thanks for your explanations. I'll miss Inquisitor when the paper goes on-line, as I'll have no idea how to download it and I'll need to buy a printer. It's been like an old friend to me and keeps my ageing brain going!
You're welcome, Ripper. No-one knows yet if Inquisitor will be in the digital version, so there might be nothing to download!
...sorry about the misprint(!) in my answer to 1 D - I'm sure you knew it was meant to be Eddo!
Any help with 26A please?
The clue is always good!
26 A. Special American meal (4)
The misprint is in the last word - so Sp(ecial) and Am(erican)!
Many thanks Never!
