I was lucky enough to start the grid fill the right way round, but in any case the correct way is clear once the fill is well under way. Even with the grid full I had to go back over my rather slapdash solving to identify the words that had moved and those that were surplus -- just as well I did, as I'd made a stab at the synonym of one of the surplus words which turned out to be incorrect. At that point it took me a ludicrously long time to identify the duo. A very nice puzzle, for which many thanks, Ploy.

I have reached a similar point where the grid is almost complete and yet I am also lacking several letters to identify what is really going on. A lucky start is likely to turn into something a little more serious. Thanks Ploy, I'm sure I will aprreciate it all the more once I have finished.
We had the same luck and started the grid fill the right way round. I t was a most helpful grid and we have thoroughly enjoyed what the endgame has revealed to us.
Many thanks to Ploy for a couple of hours of entertainment.
Excellent puzzle. I started with the grid fill the wrong way round (of course) but an early intuition put me right. It all looked fearsome at first glance but was quite a smooth solve in the end. Even the mega-long clues broke down nicely, though there was one very dodgy homophone (unless I misparsed).

A theme whose subject I love, and a whoop of joy at the endgame. Bravo Ploy!
Puzzle OK but never even heard of the comedy duo. I discovered the lines before the theme!

The indication of the duo made me think immediately of a more well known feminine double act.
It was the lines which led me, via Google to the theme, and then I was able to sort out a couple of (perfectly sensible to me) errors in the moved words. I was familiar with the duo but had forgotten this particular work. A few pretty devious clues in among a selection of much more approachable ones.
I took the cautious approach of filling two grids in parallel and it wasn't until they were nearly complete that I realised which was 'the one'. The annoying word search took me far longer than it should, and although I'd heard of the duo from childhood I wasn't familiar with this particular work. Some tough (but fair) clueing. Thanks Ploy, good fun.
The 'clue within a clue' was also a neat trick - even if I didn't get it till the end!
Completed, but fail to see how either of the answers at 18 AC could be construed as two words, unless I have made a mistake.
D'oh. How silly of me.
As with Hagen, joy at the endgame. Very familiar to me (top row made the connection), but I would expect many to find this obscure, with not a lot to help you get to the theme unless you already know of it. Some fun clues, though, and a nice mixture; easy entry clues and some very tricky ones to sort out after most of the grid was full.
I wonder if the left's direction reflects current political trends?
Completed this rather challenging listener after RR pointed out our careless mistake with one moving word.
Submitting to keep the number of submissions up - just hope we don't win the prize.
Tough theme, but I think I can see what's wanted now. A particular property of the six starred cells threw me for a long time.

Thanks, Ploy!
Hah. Didn't see it while solving, but a relevant title is appropriately inserted in one of the clues as part of the wordplay. Lovely, Ploy!
Oh, that was lovely. The theme was completely new to me (though the comedy duo I knew fairly well, and admire). Gridfill wasn't too hard, but grid-staring was a nightmare and I'm afraid some fairly serious googling-and-guessing was, for me at least, essential to getting the theme. But very happy that I did get it, and as a result have been introduced to something delightful. Thanks, Ploy.
Reminiscent of the Sea of Blue/Green, a week or two back, but are the lines doing the opposite to what they should?
perseverer, the short answer to your question is no! In the discipline indicated by the subject, view from beneath. Are you an engineer? I hope nobody answers this as discussions could prove lengthy......
I should be able to confirm this by observation later - if it's not too dark when I get home.
It would really be difficult to discuss this further without giving too much away. Just go by the preamble.
