Finished, but remain puzzled by 18 across:

Wherein one is laid to rest alongside German?

I have SOD-ER so it must be SODGER (SOD+GER). But where is the definition? Is it meant to be &lit? How does that work?

sodger
ˈsəʊdʒə/Submit
noun
non-standard spelling of soldier, used to represent regional pronunciation.
I had a similar query on another Azed one.
Sporry can't help here. But I wonder if you've noticed you have an avatar in some places but not here
Looks like a semi- &lit.
A sodger (soldier) may be laid to rest in the sod. (Possibly alongside a German?)

The first part of the clue gives SOD and the second GER but together they don't seem to me to define SODGER (soldier).
