Given its a more challenging prize crossword, I am not asking for a full answer. I have 3 letters of the answer, just the 2nd left, and am sure it must be a homonym of a family of evergreens that the Christmas trees belong to. However, if it is a homonym, I cannot work out what the 2nd letter should be to be Strengthening Supports. any ideas?

I think the 3rd letter is R. So my guess is that you may have the 1st and last, and gone for the short word for fanatics. I may have misunderstood your meaning but if that is the case, I think you need to look at the B- word answer above. It matches what I found and forces R into the 3rd letter (to be fair, I had never heard of it but cryptically got it and then googled the word) so hopefully, I have 3 letters right.

I have r as the third letter - I was not thinking of fans but a term for another type of supporter (of an idea for example)
