Trundling along quite nicely with this one (and enjoying it!) Just need a bit of help.
12 across: (which I think needs a change of letter to E) Sand down stair and cut off duplicated part of newel (9) the only word I can find is RUBRICATE, and apart from the 'sand down' = RUB I can't fathom out the word play or definition. 20 across: About to extend payment for Aussie cur (4) R?GO (I think cur becomes car)
I've got the quote & author and have filled in all the perimeter except the last word L??H I can think of a word that is an example of the quote but it isn't a 'fluffy' word - can anyone help?
Thanks in advance.

Still can't get my last example:
Is 4 down grated?
If so it leaves me with L?G for the last example - I've probably done something stupid!
I'm still searching for 20 across R?GO
Is 6 down ALGA ? I can't get the word play to prove it.
7 down: Long time taken over article for Paris Match (4) T?NE - is it a french word?
At least it's a lovely sunny day!
