37 Joke,tease. Joe, fiancé, sweetheart (Scottish word, so Gretna Green) with K, 'kissing at first'.

38 - four letter word for 'whine' ( didn't know that meaning) + two-letter abbreviation for 'the same thing', and the letter at either side 'grabbing'. The answer itself is a lumberjack's tool.

46. Swoln, expanded.

For 38a I have Hangdog. But Chambers does not show it as a tool.

I am missing two words in the middle.
