'Roll'[ = reverse] B(utcombe's head) inside 'TAN US' +HE = '(m)ale'
30 Alignment, anagram (terrible) of Tangle In +M, maiden. There's a letter missing from the short word...
anag M(aiden) ANGLE IN- def 'ne(a)t layout' is the def.
...sorry, missed the 'T(angle)'
def for 30 = 'enjoy it on the beach in August'.

many thanks ...do the extra letters spell something out?
Yes, in two parts (38 letters in all) and in clue order.
...and some spaces in the grid are bigger than their answers (lengths in brackets show spaces available).

Not sure how the top line fills in ...
i have SOAP?E??B?EAR
and i don't understand the "it" to highlight??
Tedsgran, your O is wrong.

For filling in the blanks, ignore the stuff on either side of the 8 spaces. The word that goes in is what is missing from the puzzle! You have some of the letters filled in already - P?E??B?E...

Isn't SO the answer to 1a , then 2d Arising?
Tedsgran, I have La as the note (and that means 1 A ends up as a real word).
1ac ends up as SOAP, I think, Neveracrossword.
Thanks, PM - I'd forgotten that 2 D was headless originally!
Question Author
