Good evening, I’m stuck on the following and would appreciate answers to get me going! Thanks in advance!
Across clues are normal. The wordplay in all but one down clue leads to an extra letter not entered in the grid. The number of the plain down clue needs inserting at some point into the message given by the extra down letters. The message should then lead solvers to a location represented in the grid.
One row must be changed to show the location and highlighted, along with six separate features, one of them unusual. (40 cells highlighted in total.)
All entries in the final grid are real words. The Chambers 13th edition is the primary reference
1 (D) Gypsy girl's magic ring lost in northern hail (5) : ??I?
2(D) I do relish eating sorrel - its pods provide food (6) : ??C???
4(D) Group stopping longer on IOM openly cry when leaving Douglas? (8) : ??R?????
6(D) Old Spaniard’s ready to be MC in broadcast (7) : D?N??U?
17(D) Returning cleric, imprisoned by peacekeepers with ordained son, issues retraction (8) : ?I?L?ER?
19(D) Give up terrible care and sulk (7, 2 words) : ????I??
1d CHI+MO[j](o) the 'o' is lost in wordplay but the [j] is an extra letter (def 'northern'/innuit 'hail'/greeting).
2d 'relish' = LUST (outside) OC[a] = 'sorrel' - double def (&lit) for the insect and the bean tree [the 'a' is extra].
4d answer is spelled out in the clue (ignoring the extra 'o' in 'I[o]M') def is what you might shout when you leap out of a plane.
6d anag of TO [b]E MC IN (extra 'b') def is a Spanish coin/'ready'.
17d 'cleric' = RE[v] (reversed) inside 'peacekeepers' = UN + ORD(ained) + S(on).
19d anag of CAR[e] + POUT = 'sulk' (slang phrase for 'give in' 4+3) extra 'e'.
Yes, the first letters you've given for 7,9,23 & 24 are wrong, the rest are OK.
7 A[r](abic) + anag of IN COG ['r' extra].
9 'police' is an anagram indicator - anag is R ('take') + [g]UESTS ['g' extra].
23 'bullish' = T[a]URINE ['a' extra].
24 anag of RAIN with MA[p] ('chart') inside ['p' extra].
21 'dirty' = INDE(c)[e]NT 'c' is lost in wordplay ['e' extra].
22 'it' = SA (sex appeal) reversed/'around' = AS with anag of LI[n]ES inside ['n' extra].
Matakari, hope you got that one finished off - it'll mean you can make a determined effort with tomorrow's Spectator! It'd be great if your success with Fieldfare was translated into another one or two solo completions.
Good morning, NACW, thanks for your confidence! I’ve solved, on my own, all but four of the Across clues of the Round Robin XIV. And with help all of the Down clues except five of them. I’ll study the parsing so graciously offered by ProfessorMaisie and get back to it later on. I’m always at sea with the extra letters! Meanwhile, I’m having a go at Doc’s offering for today and hope to fare much better here.
