The wordplay MAY give an extra letter.
1d. Reference part of speech that has a resounding effect (6)

27. Powerful piece from Cots (5) Queen from size of bed and Chess?

1 Trooper, American policeman loses the middle (heartless) O.
30 (Ho) Stage, prisoner- drop the 'a' in 'amount', so mount - horse
1 A... and 'about' means to reverse it.

27 I'm sure you meant to type Cats? Queen.
1 D.,Reverb, has a resounding effect. Re, reference and Verb, part of speech.
5 E, English and U, university takes on, dons Li(t), shed light (I think - I didn't round up all the letters).
I'm just being cautious here, in case I didn't lay out my answers very well. In 1 Across, that O isn't 'removed from the clue', it's involved in wordplay. 30 A does, as said, have a letter removed before solving.

Thanks NAC.

I found 16a confusing. Too many words to describe a bird.

I have the book from across letters. (3, 8,3)

Now to find the author etc.
Thanks, Hankir. Yes, I wasn't very keen on 16 A, it seemed to go on a bit, too long!
Was Cots not the clue then...seems as good (or not) as Cats. Am thinking the 'size of bed; explanation means hankir saw clue as COTS??
Bobbinwales, 27nD was definitely Cats, italicised in the clue.
Thanks, I had'nt seen it.... was just puzzled by the 'size of bed' explanation. These seeme babit beyond me but how does Cats work- is it a queen cat or from the musical (only songs I know are Memerys or Mr Mstophelees
27. I think the "size of bed' was just Hankir wondering...
Question Author
I misread Cats as Cots.
The printed version had very small fonts.

In US size of beds are King and Queen.

NAC, I realize my 2d is wrong. Hint please.
Thanks, Hankir. For 2 D, there's a five-letter 'added' and then a two-letter word meaning... a thing, quality, something not specified, 'je ne sais quoi'. That leads to 'essence' in French, of Paris.
