Surely with all those letters and the ones you have already got, You should be able to work out the direction now. There's only a couple of letters missing.
and for the last one I can only see IT EAU which is two letters +

***Thanks, Klazo and jj109! With this final batch I seek confirmation for my answers ,and also parsing for the superfluous letters. This should surely complete my lesson in understanding the technique of determining the extra letters. As usual, the italics are mine. Thanks again!

Thanks again, Klazo and jj109! I believe I may have a few false extra letters because I now have something that looks a bit confusing like: " SHADE FORTY-FIVE CELLS FOUR (PL?AES) AND AN ICONIC ITEM ONCE IN EACH. "
...four places...
The rest is correct (it means the iconic item appeared in each of the four places at one time).
...the 'a' for 'places' is in 2d - HO[a] = 'requirement to halt' (which goes inside ONE). The 'c' is in 3d [c]ORE = 'central group' (with G inside) all turned/'revolutionary'.
I have downloaded this to try and help.
I have ended up with an instruction from the superfluous letters. It reads:

Shade forty five cells. Four Places and an iconic item once in each.

I have found the iconic item (Word length is) 5,2,7
I have found Four Places related to the item with word lengths of:
5 letters
11 letters
8 letters
9 letters

The Four Places I have are 100% related to the item (in terms of History).

That gives 47 cells (Not 45) So either I have made a mistake or the setter has counted wrong.

Hopefully the instruction and my notes may help you further.
