Im a student and have a question, heres the scenario
A newly diagosed type 1 diabetic is admitted onto your ward, do you refer to the diabetic specialist nurse and dietician?

Yes, definitely.
The diabetic specialist nurse will be able to show the patient how to test blood sugar levels and what they mean, how to inject insulin and what the different types do (the slow acting ones, the faster acting ones etc), and other practical advice, like lifestyle changes, exercise, dealing with hypos, hypers etc, long term effects, nerve damage, eyesight tests and so on - ie the actual *how to live with this condition* and where to find out more information.
The dietician will be able to advise on what changes in diet may be required - based on what the patient actually eats - so that any new diet can be incorporated gradually, along with portion control and novel ways of introducing a more healthy diet (if necessary).
