completed grid, have the eight names and think I have the theme, what goes in empty cells ?
just a little hint would be much appreciated

I haven't yet completed the grid but I think that I have the names of the trains, each of which is associated with a series of (three) figures. I presume that it is a case of fitting them in jigsaw wise wherever they will fit, but I'm not so sure about the lone square yet.

I've just discovered the area to highlight. The lone square is a letter and the whole thing relates to the figures that I told you about.

I have tried so many permutations of numbers in that grid that I have lost count ! Could you give me a nudge in the right direction ? (I have 260 262 280 282 440 442 462 482)

It's OK, I've solved it ! One site had Adriatic as 280 when it should be 264
