I wonder if someone could set me on the right path. I understand how the clues work in the sense of having a definition part and a hidden jumble of the answer with 1 or 2 surplus letters - and that the clues are listed in alphabetical order of the solutions. But how do I place them on the grid? Am I supposed to solve all the clues FIRST and then it will become apparent!

I'm really enjoying the challenge of solving the clues but the grid is stumping me

Many thanks

The clues are in aphabetical order of their solutions and after removing the surplus letter/s must be fitted into the appropriate place in the grid.

As an example the first clue listed 'Goodbye to a pudding' you should remove PU leaving ADDIO to fit in- it is 38a in fact.

The letters PU are therefore the start of the themed quotation.

Good luck K

thank you K - but the nit I still don't get is how you know to put that clue in 38a

It is by a process of elimination. If you can fit in the two long clues O and S at 1d & 10d both 13 letters you will then get the starting and finishing letters 0f 14 other clues.

I don't want to say to much and spoil the puzzle for others.
