EV 848 Substitution by Raich

Have populated the grid, think I have identified the 36 clues that have redundant letters, but not all the letters. Those identified in clue order plus the gaps make little or no sense, so cannot make the SUBSTITUTION, or recognise the originator of the quote! Hints appreciated.

Hi DocHH!

As you've found the quote and, hopefully the FULL title of what it refers to, the last 11 letters cryptically explain what the document is in general terms ( first four letters give an alternative for the first word and the next seven rather cleverly lead you to the second word -- you need an alternative word for the first group of six then add the O ). The actual title of that document indicates the substitution to be made. Look for a diagonal block of seven letters which starts on the same line as the last letter of the originator of the quote.

Thanks Copelander. Had sussed it out by the time I checked just now. Could kick myself. As I suspected had gone wrong on 16a, making the first letter an M - which seemed to make sense as it gave a three letter word for soldier and a whole word connected with Eastern teachings.
Now have them all and about to tackle the substitution etc.

Am still struggling. I have the author, and the two words in the grid and have worked out the last word of 4,7, but not yet sure if I have the alternative for the first word.
I don't have the ODQ and am struggling to find the quote. Could someone kindly give me the initial letter of the author's first name to narrow the search?

I took a break from EV to do the 3 Telegraph crosswords, then with a fresh view went back and resolved the substitution.
Have to wait until sunday for our next EV challenge.

Thank you for all the help, have finished the grid by fair means (working it out logically) and foul (having flights of fancy that fit the definition etc rather well) but have only got about 2/3 of the letters so am no-where near working out quote, author or substitution!

The logistics of a niece's wedding cake must take priority for the moment, but I have no doubt I shall be taking sneaky looks and hoping to have a brain-storm.

Get your priorities right!! --- Either that or make sure we all get a piece of weding cake!!

To short circuit the process look at one of Copelander's excellent posts where he points out the originator of the quote runs diagonally from the top row. You are looking for a seven letter surname.

I did find a name but am blowed if I can find a quotation in my ODQ that fits the no. of letters stated in the preamble for any of the three names in there. Will have another look tonight, meanwhile it is deadline time again.

You will all have to wait for the w. cake, it's three tiers, royal icing and an extra Maderia for the non-fruitcake eaters so will be some weeks in the making and whether there will be anything left after the fruitcake vultures have struck is debatable!

Devadolly -- it's Gerald and in ODQ4 he has two entries. You need the shorter one. Look at the full title of what it refers to and one of Christiana's later posts.

Thank you Novalis, the plot thickens..........my ODQ is a revised 4th edition (1996) and G only has one quotation assigned to him! Will google.

Thanks Copelander, I think the problem is the revised bit, definately only one entry for each of the 3 similar names! They do mess about a bit during a revision rather than just a plain reprint.

My copy is also the Revised 4th Edition - 1996.

The required quote is in mine. On page 385 right hand columnb 2nd up from the bottom (Hardback version).

I am such a twit!!! I read Novalis's post as Gerald having 2 quotes and my Gerald only has one that is 30 letters long not the 36 which matched the clues. Nor did it seem to fit in with the letters I have got, but as there is every chance I have got the wrong letters............................................................
