If I am not mistaken Doc HH noted two weeks ago that he'd be absent for this week's meeting of the N&C club, so I will take it upon myself to start the proceedings (and will be really embarrassed if someone has already done so).

I found this one to be pretty easy going, populating the grid and finding the 4 unclued lights in a relatively short time. However, I then discovered I had identified only 12 of the 14 clues that need to be "put right"! Harumph. I will go back over them later tonight to see what I skipped over the first time through.

Hello everyone,
Courtesy of "dr b", this is a really glittery thread!
Devadolly, I hope it isn't having an adverse effect on the eye, or are the shades still in place? The cake will be fine, don't worry.
Ringer, hope your back is improving!
Copelander, the alcoholic anaesthetic worked in terms of creating a reasonably pleasurable afternoon, but probably drank more than a months "allowance" of units in one afternoon! Started with G&Ts, which went on too long as birthday boy was delayed, then switched to an unknown Red wine to wash down the buffet food, finishing off with a few Famous Grouse.
Christiana, All the 8 pens I have gathered write quite well, better on good quality paper though.
Novalis, the comment about no correct answers is disturbing. As I have said before, I no longer send answers in so it doesn't worry me. I'll post the appropriate e-addy at the end of this.
Welcome Speravi, please feel free to N&C with us, there are three requirements, enjoyment of EV, enjoyment of food and drink and prepared to N&C!
Physicsgirl, weather here has been super too, hope minipg picking up a tan, after application of suitable sun-cream.

Hi All - and welcome to Spevari
Just had the first BBQ of the year - hope it wasn't the last!! Thinking of buying a new one - ours was a wedding present 20 years ago - does anyone have any opinion on gas v ordinary? I guess my other half can burn the food no matter what, but at least he will cook on one.
DocHH - I can see I've a long way to go before I surpass your record of pens. I hold a pawltry one - and that's no use on the flimsy paper they are using.
Thanks for asking about my back. The problem is a protruding disc which first occurred about 8 years ago and occasionally plays up, usually at the most inopportune of moments. Now much improved - but it's a good excuse not to go to the supermarket. Thank goodness for home delivery!!
Ringer - we have a brick-built traditional BBQ which serves us very well. The kit is available in most DIY outlets in a box measuring approx 24"-14"-4". Rather amused us to see "bricks not included" written on the side. Almost up there with "may contain nuts" on the side of a nutty cereal. Hello Speravi - please feel free to visit our dunce's corner whenever you feel the need! Devadolly and the others usually provide some very tasty fare.
DocHH - 8 pens??? Have never won so much as a book token. Maybe if my brain improves over time? It would help if I ever posted my paltry efforts, but I usually limp over the finish line far too late!
A belated welcome to Spevari. I'm with Physicsgirl on the brickbuilt variety, found ours very successful, excellent plant tub storage area in the winter too.
"8 Pens" Oh DocHH you really are too much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I must admit I use my single EV (very nice stainless steel variety) 'quill' a great deal, very good to write with. Unfortunately that is IT as far as winning Xword prizes goes, have religiously sent in the Sat cryptic most weeks for about 40 years and not got so much as a sniff - it has become a minor challenge now.
Had the first feed of newps (new spuds) on Sunday, a new variety to me Vales Emerald, thoroughly enjoyed them but still don't beat Anya. Also had the first of the Mange Tout, admittedly there were only 4 pods each - but one has to start somewhere!
Am doing quite well EVwise and have completed the top half of the grid and got 8 (or possibly 9) of the 14 but am at a bit of a loss about how they connect with the (which) 4 pairs and their unclued corrections. Mayhap I just want to relax in the DC for a bit, it is the only place Himself and the rest can't find me!
Thank you for the address Doc.
Hello ringer and Devadolly,
If it's any consolation I haven't sent in an EV since my last win, (EV 748) as two things had happened. First the pen was downgraded to plastic from the elegant Stainless Steel pen, and then only 1 winner rather than 3 each week! BTW the pen is pictured under the General Knowledge crossword overleaf from EV.

Devadolly, the 14 need to be read in clue order, and then treated thematically, ie, a correction of a 1ac.
The 4 unclued entries are each clued by a 1ac, in each case a pair of normal entries.
The 14 are only connected to the 4 pairs by the fact that the first letter of their Clues is anagrammed to tell you what is wrong in 14 clues, but if you have 8 or 9 of the 14, you know the 8 letter word which describes what is wrong!
Enjoying the glorious sunshine, sitting on the patio with a coffee, perhaps later that will change to something cold and alcoholic!
Hello again. Thought I was bound for the DC this morning as demoralised by the solving strategies blurb saying it was one for new solvers when I've been really staggering along. However light did eventually dawn and then found it easy enough to identify the four pairs. BUT the dunce's corner is still looming, as despite having completed everything else I'm not yet 'getting' 3d or, consequently, the two words. Will try again later.
I am (more or less) in the ame position as Christiana. I have populated the grid, solved the 8-lettered anagram and identified the four 1 acrosses!

I am having problems sorting out the 14 letters which provide the fifth and final 1 across. I assume the first letter of the 14 is P (rather than K)?
Hello Crofter and Christiana,
The rubric says "The 3d-ed letters, (O?ST-ED) letters spell out etc." That should help with 3d and indicate which letters you should use for the last 1ac.
Thanks for clearing my muddled head, Dr. B. Have conquered it now!
Still somewhat muddled - apologies Doc H H for confusing you with Dr. B.
Question Author
crofter - the first letter of the 14 is in fact a K.

By the way, no stars for anything on the second page - they become trite if overused.
Which drb - the stars or the N & Cing? I'm hoping not the latter.............................
Question Author
why, the stars, of course. One can never have too much N-ing; C-ing should only be limited if it refers to one's teeth.
When it comes to the writing under the grid, does anybody think think that horse chestnuts might come into it? Or would that not be "overpowering" enough?
Hi everybody!
Just logged out of all the various Exam Board pages and on to the peace and tranquility of EV.
Very belated welcome from me to Speravi. "I shall hope" (s)he becomes a regular here. It seems that there is no "Dunces' Corner" this week but I'd like to have an open invitation for membership whenever I need it.
Agree about the pens --- good writers but plastic is no substitute for stainless steel. My cousin still wants to win one ( in her own name ) and she has written to the Telegraph crossword editor about "the no all correct entries for EV862". I'll let you know what the reply is.
Because of exam work EV 866 will be my last for two or three weeks. Even sadder, during the marking period I go on the wagon. ( Make up for it afterwards though! )
Welcome back novalis, you are obviously entering one of your busy work weeks.
However, we do still need confirmation from Devadolly that she isn't going into DC! I'm taking heart from her previous post weeks ago that we were welcome if we needed to be, have got a hamper packed in readiness!
Sorry to hear you will be missing for a few weeks after EV 866. More disconcerting is the self-inflicted lack of indulgence!
Just realised that although I'll be missing on the day of EV 868, but I'll be looking for everyone on the monday, I'll be totally missing for EV 869 and EV 870. Herself is dragging me off on holiday. I think she is concerned that I am doing too much work and doesn't want me to be cracking up under the pressure!
Or is it perhaps just that she wants to go! Or perhaps she is apologising for dragging me off to 2 family parties in the space of 1 month!! What an ENIGMA! Novalis, I'll be OK, it's on an All Inclusive basis, so I'll try and make up for you!
Rollo, I think you need to go for the correct spelling rather than the tree version.
Hi DocHH!

Kind words indeed. Yes, it is starting to get very busy. The exam which I mark is on Friday. It's in the lap of the gods as to whether any scripts will arrive on Saturday. If they do I shall spend time reading them through in preparation for the two-day meeting next Wednesday and Thursday. it's simple though --- When I'm doing this work I want to be fair to both the exam and the candidates ( after all, it's their future ). Also a member of my team could phone me with a problem at any time. Coherent and germane answers are called for. Hope you enjoy your holiday.
Just as a recommendation to all oenophiles--Iceland are doing an offer of 3 for 10 on a superb S. Sfrican red at the moment. The neck collar 9 red ) has the Lions' ( R.U.) badge on it, the label ( white ) reads " South Africa's First Cape, Cape of Good Hope and a smaller label ( red ) at the bottom reads Cape Red, Cape of Good Hope. It is most palatable but one "word of warning", it is 14% proof.
Oh good! You had me worried there drb, casting aspersions on N & Cing would be very worrying.
Now, DocHH you know you are welcome in DC, and you know you want to visit, so why don't you (in a parlance I do so detest) just "Come on down". In fact, I think it would be very good if we all met in DC and had a meeting about the various difficulties we each seem to have with the EV (certain persons excepted) - everyone (most of us) seem to get stuck on a different bit (which I suppose points to a definate Quality in the type of Xword) which also makes one feel less thick! We could also have some lovely picnics.
Oh, Novalis - you know you are going to peep at this site, however busy you are.........and..............waggon? What waggon? Oil the brain man, oil the brain!
Where are you off to DocHH? BTW Eye is improving and have cast aside the tropical shades for the normal reactolites and await a 2pm appointment with the yellow drops tomorrow - thank you.
Dug a root of the Dunluce newps for supper tonight, will give verdict tomorrow.

Regards
Hi Devadolly!
I'll peep if I have chance to peep at EV, but for 867 that's extremely unlikely as I'll have to ensure that my team are in a position to mark. As for "oiling the brain", one whiff of the cork is enough for that. Glad the eye's on the mend.
Physicsgirl! - Sorry I should have asked how mini PG is.
Devadolly. I suspect that given the new marking methods, Novalis will be permanently glued to the "Exam Board" sites! I am sure he would prefer to be N&Cing, but a living has to be earned!
Am going to a Riu Hotel in Tunisia which has conference facilities, should I check out if use of it is free of charge for N&Cing EV-ophiles! Much better to meet outside DC, it just puts everthing in a more positive arena to have discussion. In DC it would centre around "why have I failed", rather than how do I stay out of there? It is also just far too comfortable in DC! Also consider at the Riu it would be All Inclusive, no heavy food and drink parcels to carry in, and our own private Chefs!!
Pleased that your eye is on the mend, and will look forward to verdict on the newbieps. Please also report on EV progress.
