If I am not mistaken Doc HH noted two weeks ago that he'd be absent for this week's meeting of the N&C club, so I will take it upon myself to start the proceedings (and will be really embarrassed if someone has already done so).
I found this one to be pretty easy going, populating the grid and finding the 4 unclued lights in a relatively short time. However, I then discovered I had identified only 12 of the 14 clues that need to be "put right"! Harumph. I will go back over them later tonight to see what I skipped over the first time through.

I think DocHH said he would be about after 9 p.m. today. Agree with you about this week's- likewise could find only 12 of the 14 but think ( hope ) I have the other two. However, the words spelt out are under the theme's entry in "Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable".
What is irking me and my cousin is that she sent the James Mason one in by first-class post a week before the entries closed and yet we are told that no all-correct entries were received by the closing date. We've double-checked the photocopy against the solution and there doesn't appear to be any mistakes, so it looks as if the postal system has let her down.

Hello drb have just 'had a look' to see if there was anybody there, and lo and behold, you had just posted! Have got the theme and quite a few of the clues but am not firing on all cylinders at all. little S** still in eye and making presence known at 5 hrly intervals, nothing like last week but still off-putting, next quack visit (apologies drb & copelander!) Weds. have two clues that change the definition - does that mean anything? I am sure there is probably a clue in the 'up-side-down bit' but I refuse to use that as we managed without it quite (un)happily for 800+ EV's so I don't think it necessary. Don't really want hints and just N & Cing!!!!
PS I'm sure it has been posted before but have missed (or ignored) it - do we have the email adress for the DT/ST Crossword Editor? I really don't like the positioning of the EV and other Xwords in Living - so flimsy and altogether the wrong shape - really would like it back in 7, so much easier to mull over in bed and didn't get so tatty!

N: aha. done now.
Too bad about the James Mason one - I never even think about sending mine in (a distinctive telegraph pen, handcrafted nib notwithstanding, is not enough of an enticement). I also always just assumed there'd be so many correct answers the odds would be too poor to make it worthwhile.

Hi all
Novalis - I agree with you re the post. I think I sent a correct solution in plenty of time too. Most annoying
Devadolly - hope your eye improves soon. It must be really bugging you. I've had problems with my back this week, but nothing like the pain you must be in.
Have actually started this week's EV - but have only populated about a quarter of the grid so far. I too hate the flimsy paper and have started photocopying it because as I spend so much time rubbing out there wouldn't be any paper left. I like to do the kiler sudoku which is on the reverse side and have had to change the pen I use because it was showing through. Ah well, enough of this -it's turning into a M & G (moan & groan) instead of a N & C!!! Back to the grid!!

All done today. Well done dr b for doing the posting. Novalis, I'm sure I too sent in a correctly completed grid, tho' I don't keep a photocopy of it. It's not the thought of missing out on a Telegraph pen that's upsetting, but that they can say there were NO correct solutions recieved. Maybe Royal Mail does have a lot to answer for! Devadolly, I'm glad the eye is improving. (and I don't mind what I'm called by friends! ) Another beautiful day here, and another barbeque tonightr.
This offering made for a very enjoyable romp, I thought. Thank you, Glow-worm.
I was interested to see the comments about EV862 Secret Tribute (to James Mason) - I wondered whether there would be any. It seems that there were wholesale failures of the postal system. I see no reason why that puzzle shouldn't have attracted an entry comparable with a typical Listener: if so, some 500+ entries were lost or delayed in the post (or perhaps there is another explanation - accidental premature shredding of entries?).

Just reporting in. As usual haven't really started yet, though had a quick glance. But like to locate the thread as soon as possible. Also wondering how many times I waste a stamp trying to get EV there on time from Portugal. However, having won the all-singing, all dancing (but alas, not all writing, but rather scratchy) pen on one occasion, it obviously does arrive on time occasionally.
Hello everyone, had a look early this morning, and populated about 50% of the grid, before being dragged off to the family party thing,
Got home about an hour ago, in no condition to even look at EV or Chambers! Will link up with you to N&C tomorrow. Thanks dr b for staring the thread. I found that I have another family party to go to soon, AAAARRRGGHH! Will keep you posted. dr b "Hope you have got all your off-spring suitably re-assigned"!!

Good Morning, thank you for the stars drb - don't think I have ever had 3 stars for anything before!
Novalis - have the first & last acrosses but haven't done any more since yesterday, will have a look later after having a nag at an impertinent Sub who had the termerity to alter my last piece and thus give WRONG info, GGGGGrrrrrrrrr! Plus, getting the fruit ready for the BIG CAKE................help..middle tier a complete sucess....but..........................................
Ringer, I don't know, back's are just as bad, there is nowhere one can put them to ease them!
Just a general thought about the lack of correct entries for the James Mason EV, I was told by a very reputable source that, and this was some time ago, all the entries for the Xwords are sent to Canary Wharf, put into a bin and then a large armful scooped out, parcelled up and sent to the Xword Ed who then randomly picked the winners Perhaps this is where the lack of correct entries came from, the initial random sort! All care of internet working from anywhere I suppose.

Hello everyone,
Fortunately woke this morning in a more alert state and completed populating the grid fairly quickly, took a while to find the 4 pairs, had picked up most of the 14 during solving clues, but had to search for the others.
Apols for absence tendered for EV 868, Herself's sister's 50th party, another surprise one!
