I am doing a most interesting quiz and have come across a few stumbling blocks which I would appreciate help with. The clues are cryptic and all the answers contain the name of a creature. For example: A goon (5.8.)-------Spike Milligan. ..... "pike".
10: Short-legged white dog (8.7.).
14: Mentioned on the shipping forecast (6.4.).
16: Composed by Schubert (5.7.).
18: Obvious (2.5.2.1.9.).
20: A seaweed (12).
There are others which I feel I have the correct answer but can't see a creature in them:
3: Making a special effort to please (7.4.9.). I thought of, "Bending over backwards"; "Leaning over backwards"; "Falling over backwards" which has "ling"(a fish) in it but I already have that word elsewhere in the quiz.in 21: An Indian tea (10)-- "Darjeeling" .
30: C.P.S.(5.11.7.) which surely must be "Crown Prosecution Service" but where's the creature? A "rose" is a flower!
37: Nacre (6.2.5.) which again, must be "Mother of Pearl" but where's the creature? Surely one can't call a "pear" a creature.
Any help would be most welcome.

14 DOGger Bank
14 DOGger Bank
16 TROUT Quintet
18 As plain as a PIKEstaff
37 I'd agreed Mother of Pearl, but perhaps it's a tenuous clue - mother of pearl grows inside an Oyster, which is a creature...?

14 dogger bank
37 MOTHer of Pearl
30 CROWn prosecution service
3 benDING Over backwards
well done bibble, with the MOTH.
3 DarjEELing contains Eel, so maybe you are right with Ling for the other one.
10 must be something TERRIER but I'm not good with dog breeds
10 SEALyham terrier
bibble, how can you be so Lert at this hour...? ;-)
your suggestion for terrier provided the key for that clue
;-)
Seems as if PIKE appears in two clues. Is that right?

Hello everyone again. Many thanks for all your help. I feel suitably humbled by your cleverness, I have managed No. 20 which is bladderwrack (adder)
Mike, pike was in the example so can excuse repetition.
There used to be a TV quiz which had words within words and I was pretty useless at that also so I don't think my brain sees the same things. I recall there was one word always coming up with zillions of letters in it which started floccinochi.........etc.etc. I think the show finally ran out of steam because of this word.
Again, thanks to all.
Floccinaucinihilipilification. the act of estimating as worthless, invented by Shakespeare in Love's Labour' Lost.
That was Catchword with Paul Coia. Another word which was a staple of the programme was PNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOCONIOSIS - 45 letters!

Just one more I'm not happy with:
27, Shining with light (9). I have "Emanating", but is "man" a creature. I'm sure judging from other questions that there must be a better solution. "Emulating" would be nice with "emu" but it doesn't fit the definition. Any ideas please.
