I had a quiet pint or two with NoM at the weekend and we both said that it was about time that this re-started ... then I got the short straw :)

So ... this week we have from Mr Tesco :

Heidsieck & Co. Monopole Blue Top Champagne Brut 75cl - £14.99

A real top notch Champagne from a well respected House.

Lots of fruit, not as 'sharp' as some Champers prepared for the British market and plenty of proper grapey aftertaste.

Don't get it totally Baltic - normal fridge temperature and then let it come up to about 7° or 8° for drinking.

A real bargain at £14.99

From Aldi :

Minarete Ribera Del Duero - £5.49

Way underpriced - it can only be this cheap because no-one has really cottoned on to how good Ribera Del Duero is. It will knock any Rioja of a similar (or actually much higher) price into a cocked hat.

Brilliant with BBQs (if we ever get the weather) or a very good fruity red to have with cheese and biscuits of an evening.

From Averys :

De Martino 347 Chardonnay Reserva Limari Valley Chile 2011 - £8.33 (if you buy 6)

My favourite white of the last year or so - read my review on their site -

Great with fish or pasta - but loads of flavour and stands up to Roast Dinners very well.

Drink and Enjoy - and post your favourite tipples here too

Fill yer boots woofie - it's good stuff.

I'll be round to supervise the opening, don't want any injuries :)
J'adore Ribera del Duero :)
Hubby loves red wine - will beetle off to Aldi and score himself a case before anybody else buys it all!
Is it as full bodied as Rioja?
Question Author
Depends on the Rioja Zacs - it's at the lighter end of the scale for tannins, but lots of body & really nice fruit.
Tempranillo is light on tannins but still full bodied. Same as a crianza or more like a reserva?
Question Author
More to it than a standard tempranillo I think - possibly the (gran) reserva is in the same ballpark.
I'm well stocked with bubbles but might brave Aldi for the red!

Zac ... The more extreme climatic conditions in Ribera del Duero under which the Tempranillo is grown results in a more intensely-flavoured and far jammier wine than anything they produce in Rioja. They have hot days and cool nights - they call this the "fuego y hielo" (fire and ice) effect.
Why is it I love Guinness but don't like wine?
Ok ok I'm off to Aldi. What time do they open?
I'm with you society. Neither Wine of Guinness, but I do love a French lager.

8am for most stores- but it's part of their standard range, so should still be in stock if you oversleep :)
Cheers SD.
I recently had a superb SA Chenin Blanc from Spar for just £4.50. It was part of their "Hand Selected" range. They've also got Donatella Cava on at £5.50 - a good rival to Freixnet or Marqués de Monistrol ...
Question Author
Always useful to have a couple of good ideas for Spar - it tends to be a distress purchase ("I'm in Aberystwyth and it's the only shop open") and it's easy to pick a dud, when actually there is some good stuff lurking if you can spot it.
Hell's bells, how do you know all this? I just buy bottles with pretty labels ;)
Some of my favourite whites are. Torres Vina Sol, from Catalunya.
Felix Solis, Vina Albali Valdepenas (Valley of Stones) La Mancha.
A lot of Portugese white wines are rarely sold in UK unfortunately. Forget Mateus Rose. Have a look out for, Joao Pires and Tagus Creek
Thank you we have missed it :-)
