Just out of interest ,Tilly, when I was at primary school the spelling was always
'encyclopædia' but I've noticed that the usual spelling now seems to be 'encyclopedia' with an e instead of the æ . There were other words too that I recall used to have diphthong thingies (manœuver, Fœtus etc). Does anyone ever use them now? Did their disappearance coincide with the wider use of wordprocessors/PCs? Or am I just mistaken in remembering that that wa sthe usual spelling in the 1960s?
I think 'it' all went to pot when the I.T.A. teaching method came and went.
Well done for finding them on your p.c. I don't think they are easily accessible.
