It's actually 'cuit', the Scots word for ankle...ie hock. Obviously, I don't know if Barender's reply is just a typo, but you need to think again if you mean to send the puzzle in! Vintage = cru but without the 'r', ie the end of flavour, in. Then add the 'it'.

Now that I know you submit the puzzle, Judy, I'm going to have to stop offering assistance, 'cos your entry only reduces my chances. (This is a joke!)
I've won a couple of times, too, over the decades, but 'earned' not nearly enough to pay for the envelopes and stamps.

So it's you I'm competing with then. I think it's a pretty stingy prize for the amount of work it takes, but I enjoy the challenge. Apparently it's the 2nd hardest crossword published, the first being the Listener in the Times, it's the only Times crossword I can't complete, in fact I don't even understand the grid let alone the clues, and the fact that the grid changes weekly doesn't help.
