julia-mag - it does make a difference, yes. We get paid through advertisers placing their ads on our pages.
However, most of our traffic is from people searching through Google and finding the site - so it's swing and roundabouts. Or rather, Google defines a lot of the internet and how it is used, and we just bob along in their ecosystem. :)
Naturally, we need to keep the lights on - AB isn't a charitable endeavour - sadly! Although we encourage charity in the community.
QuizmasterG - I understand that frustration re: where is the line?
It may go against the "spirit of the quiz" - although you might have to explain the different spirits available. This might be more obvious to you than me as you are much more involved in the Q&P world.
We can't police for the desires of the setters, we just try and make sure everyone is getting on and not being rude to one another. We get around 500 questions a day posted on the site, with a magnitude more answers - we're not in a position to account for an external parties desire such as "no asking on AB until the full moon" etc.
This quiz was promoted in our round up here:

If the quiz setter wants us to stop promoting it, all they would have to do is let us know - this might reduce the number of people asking questions about it? I'm not sure how it helps the animal shelter though.
